Thomas Walder plaque

Thomas was a prominent clock and watchmaker in Arundel and is the only Walder so far to have the benefit of a blue plaque in the High Street. His shop has been replaced by a later building but his original town clock is still there, albeit with a new face.

Thomas left a detailed notebook which is now in Arundel museum. The museum has also produced a pamphlet on Thomas which includes pictures of his notebook and some of his clocks. I am not sure at this point if it is still available. A Google search produced two Thomas Walder clocks listed in auctions.

The 1851 census records Thomas as a retired watchmaker, widower, age 84, living in Tarrant Street, Arundel (185119).

A note of caution on these family details. A2A has a Settlement Order for Arundel dated 17 Dec 1785. Thomas Walder married Hannah, Tortington, 2 children mentioned. One of them is probably an Elizabeth as her son Walder Martin is with Thomas in 1841.
