The Havill records for the period 1590-1641
relate almost exclusively to the parish of St Andrew's, located at the
heart of the thriving port, whose medieval church was rebuilt in the
15th century, funded by donations from the town's wealthy merchants.
Interestingly one of the records found identifies a Paschoe Havill, merchant, and possibly a descendant of an earlier church benefactor, which begs the question as to whether the St Andrew's enclave of Havills were descendants of the port's merchants from an earlier period. After 1641 there are no further Havill records for Plymouth which suggests either that the family members moved on, or the name died out through marriage. There is some evidence to suggest that at least one member found a home at Broadhempston where a small cluster of records occur, and others may have moved out of Plymouth and found their way to Exeter. |
