Henry, married with a family, and an established carpenter and builder in Paris, together with his son Edwin, relocated to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois around 1870, a journey pioneered by his younger unmarried brother George five years earlier.

Chicago had been expanding quickly since the 1840`s, but at this time the city was entering a period of unparalleled growth with a flourishing economy bringing in huge numbers of new residents from rural communities and immigrants from Europe. The records suggest that Henry was accompanied by his brother William, and that they planned for their wives to join them once they had become established.

In Henry's case, however, it appears that things just did not go to plan, as his wife Ellen and their daughters are listed back home in both the 1871 and 1881 Canadian census. However the 1880 US census shows his son William had joined him in Chicago, and curiously lists a wife, Bell and a further son, Frederick Earl resulting from the union. No other records can be found for this marriage which if true would have been bigamous.

At this time Henry was recorded as a saloon keeper, a calling he shared with George who was listed in 1875-1876 as a saloon owner on 4th Ave. no 166. Later records show that Henry had yet another son, Percy by a Mary Belle Jackson, and there is some evidence that they may indeed have gone through a marriage ceremony.

By 1900 Henry a widower, and Percy, then at school, were living in Hyde Park Township, Chicago, close to his brothers William and George.

Before Henry`s death his son Edwin, a saloon keeper and a widower, returned to Hamilton, Ontario.

Up to 1867 Ontario was known as Canada West.
