Elizabeth Rapell b. abt.1768 d. 1846 Poltimore -Dec Qtr St Thomas 10 187

The absence of a baptism record for John leaves his parentage to be determined
in the context of:

-His established DoB and point of entry into an existing family.
-The pattern of family name associations, in this case his sons Richard, Anthony and John.
-The association of John and his son Anthony with the parish of Poltimore.

The identity of John`s wife is based upon the baptism record of their son James Rapell Havill , a traditional method of keeping a family name through the female line. No record can be found of her baptism record or a marriage record, which would have been about 1788.
Else Churchill of the Society of Genealogists explains " At certain times stamp duties and taxes were levied on entries in registers that undoubtedly caused people to avoid the costs of these important ceremonies. This means you might not find an entry you are seeking especially during the period 1694-1706 or 1784-94 ".

The birth of son Thomas in 1797 at ( presumably ) Clyst Honiton gives a clue to the family's movement.

Richard, Anthony and Thomas were born at Clyst Honiton, prior to the family moving to Aylesbeare where Elizabeth, John, James and Mary were born.

Thomas was baptised at Clyst Honiton in 1806, maybe the earliest oppportunity to be baptised in his birth parish.
