William`s elder brother John entered the family
butchery business, but William decided to train to become a qualified
carpenter and builder. In 1855 John left Exeter and sailed for New Zealand where he set up as a butcher in Victoria Street, Auckland. Four years later William encouraged by the potential of a new country, followed in his brother`s footsteps and set sail for New Zealand aboard the " Joseph Fletcher" arriving in Auckland on 17th August 1859. |
