above details and the commentary below. "There is a family rumour that Alice Sophia was the base born child of the local lord of the manor. My Gran told me a few times that her mother was "got upon" in the fields by him! Other members of the family also remember that Alice Sophia thought she was rather better than everyone else as she was of blue blood! The Walders lived at Peacocks Hill, Cowfold before Sebina was married. Nearby is High Hurst Manor where William Walder may have rented his land from. This could also explain the Hurst part of Alice Sophia's name as well. I am not sure yet who was resident at the manor at the time of birth of Alice Sophia so cannot yet tell who the real father was. On her marriage certificate her father is named as Henry Hurst, farmer. I would be most interested to hear from anyone who can shed more light on the people or places. Particularly the birth of Alice Sophia.Contact Edith May Paice (Puddy) met Walter Thomas Alexander Skinner who was born 6 Aug 1876, Chelsea, Middlesex. They had two children the oldest, a son, was born c1921 and died as a baby (not sure of his name yet). Then Ruth Edith Paice was born 28 Oct 1924, Fulham Palace Road, London and she died 8th July 2006, Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex. She married John Atkinson, b 28 Jan 1925 Middlesbrough and he died 22 Oct 1993, Brighton General Hospital. They married at St Gabriel's, Harrow on 7th June 1948. They had 8 children which are my mother & her siblings. John Atkinson was born of John Atkinson and Catherine Loy." |
