John of Ovingdean appears from his will to have been quite a prosperous farmer owning cattle, sheep and arable land. His son John married and moved to Iford around 1559. At some point he acquired 'free' land and became a yeoman. He died a wealthy man, leaving bequests to his children and 11 grandchildren, legacies which enabled them in turn to maintain yeoman status.
