James became the first pastor of Cuckfield
Baptist Church in 1772. In 1776 he purchased Bulltrough Farm for £945. The farmhouse still stands at the top of Boltro Road in what is now Haywards Heath. He has been variously described as a tanner and a maltster. |

That Mary Walder of Cuckfield, widow of James Walder of Cuckfield, tanner, died at Cuckfield on 31 August 1797 and was buried at the Baptist Meeting House in Cuckfield on 5 September 1797, that she left James Walder and Lydia Walder, her son and daughter by the said James Walder, her husband, her surviving, and that the said James Walder, her son, and Lydia Walder, who since married John Trussler, were still living in Cuckfield. |
