Henry, a joiner by trade, lived and worked
within the St Pauls district of Exeter. On his death in 1836 he left instructions for his business associates John Gubb, brush maker and James Morgan, grocer, to liquidate his assets and settle his debts, leaving a estate of barely a £100 for his wife, Mary. Around 1834, his four eldest sons emigrated to North America, with William, James and Henry establishing themselves and their families in Paris, Brant County, Canada West. Paris which was first settled in 1829 when a Hiram Capron bought the land, and constructed a mill on the present town site, was developing quickly. By 1851 the brothers were established members of a growing community, and in demand for their carpentry and building skills, a profession that several of their sons followed with success. In later years several of the brothers' offspring moved to the US in search of better opportunities in a much larger and more dynamic economy. At least two of the brothers, James and Henry were active in later years, being listed in the Paris gazetteer for 1870. Charles the youngest of the four brothers moved to Iowa shortly after the first offical settlers began to arrive in 1833. It is not known as to his movements prior to arrivng in Iowa, but many of the settlers had previously resided in another state, in his case possibly Canada West. Charles is listed in the US 1840 census for Scott County, an area adjacent to the Missisippi river, and within an area known as the Black Hawk Purchase. Later records show him to have been a farmer. |
