Samuel Walder (Sam) was born in 1870 at Tower Hill, Horsham and was the eldest son of Samuel and Caroline.

He attended Colliers School in the town paying 1/2 d a week and he left on his eleventh birthday.

In July 1888 he followed his father and started work for the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) as a porter at Havant Station. Promotion to guard came in 1899 and he worked on the Havant to Hayling Island branch line for the next 35 years.

Of a jovial appearance, he is reputed to have inspired the "Sunny South Sam" poster campaign of the Southern Railway in the 1920s.

During WW2 aged 70, he came out of retirement to work as a lighting attendant on the Portsmouth to London trains.

He married Emily Cripps from Horsham in 1902 and they lived on Hayling Island. Seven years later in 1909, they moved to 7 Lymbourne Cottages, Havant from where Sam died in 1950. He and Emily are buried in Havant Cemetery.
