Thomas was born in Warnham, Sussex, in 1811. He was a journeyman carpenter by trade, the first Walder for several generations who was not involved in farming.

A few miles along the coast Ann was living in Brighton where she was born. She was the daughter of William Tugwell a gentleman of independent means, he owned one of the large houses on the Brighton sea front, 32 Marine Parade.

Their first two children were born in New Shoreham, the third in nearby Southwick. The family finally returned to Warnham probably via adjoining Southwater where the first four offspring were all christened on the 31st December 1855.

Thomas died in 1866, he was buried at Rusper a village neighbouring Warnham and the home of his parents. Ann died in 1899 and was buried at Warnham.
